If you like beauty contests, tonight will be a feast for the eyes. But the delegate counts for the Republican presidential nomination won’t be affected by the results of the contests in three states Tuesday. The prize? Momentum.
Here’s a quick guide to the voting Tuesday in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri.
COLORADO: The state’s Republican caucuses begin at 7 p.m. local time, or 9 p.m. Eastern time, and generally last about an hour and a half. People will vote in a presidential preference poll—aka beauty contest—but those results have no direct influence on which delegates Colorado sends to the Republican National Convention. Voters at the caucuses will also choose delegates to local party bodies which then participate in choosing the convention delegates.
MINNESOTA: Minnesota’s caucuses begin at 7 p.m. local time, or 8 p.m. Eastern time. As in Colorado, Minnesota’s caucuses feature a presidential preference ballot that is nonbinding. Caucus-goers also will elect local delegates who later are involved in choosing the convention delegates.
MISSOURI: Polls opened this morning at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. local time in Missouri’s presidential preference primary. Eastern time is an hour later. Newt Gingrich isn’t on the ballot, so the battle among Republicans is between Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul.
The prize, once again, is merely bragging rights. Missouri’s real delegate-selection process starts Saturday, March 17, when the state holds its Republican caucuses. As in Colorado and Minnesota, those caucuses will select delegates who later help choose the national convention delegates.
