QUINNIPIAC POLL:: Santorum Leads GOP Field With 35% Support – Wash Wire – WSJ

Another new national poll shows Rick Santorum leading Mitt Romney in the Republican presidential race.

The Quinnipiac University poll shows Mr. Santorum leading the Republican field with the support of 35% of the GOP voters surveyed , while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 26%. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich stands at 14%, and Rep. Ron Paul has 11%.

Perhaps as troubling for the Romney camp, the Santorum lead widens if Messrs. Gingrich and Paul are taken out of the race. In a head-to-head matchup against Mr. Romney, Mr. Santorum prevails 50% to 37%.

Mr. Romney leads among self-described moderates, but Mr. Santorum has a wide lead among white evangelical Christians, and among supporters of the tea part movement, “Sen. Rick Santorum’s lead among Republican voters and GOP-leaning independents is built on the votes of Republican men, Tea Party supporters and white evangelical Christians,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “Santorum is riding the momentum wave from his trifecta of victories in Missouri, Colorado and Minnesota, but so far this year momentum from one week has been a much-overhyped asset by the time the next round of voting comes along.”
