MICHAEL BARONE:: Is Obama losing young voters? | WashEx

Barack Obama’s job approval rating is down to 45 percent in the lastest CNN/ORC poll, conducted June 11-13, with 54 percent disapproval. The approval number is down from 53 percent in CNN/ORC’s May 17-18 poll. Most interesting result: Obama is getting only 48-percent approval from those age 18 to 34, only 3 percent above his national average. By way of comparison, ... Go To Article

MICHAEL BARONE:: Obama administration: Some religions are more equal than others | WashEx

The Obama administration “strongly objects” to a proposed House amendment to the defense authorization bill which would require, in the words of its sponsor, Rep. John Fleming, R-La., “the Armed Forces to accommodate ‘actions and speech’ reflecting the conscience, moral, principles or religious beliefs of the member.” Fox News has the story. Fleming points to ... Go To Article

MICHAEL BARONE:: NSA surveillance, if ungentlemanly, is not illegal | WashEx

"Gentlemen do not read each other's mail." That's what Secretary of State Henry Stimson said to explain why he shut down the government's cryptanalysis operations in 1929. Edward Snowden, who leaked National Security Agency surveillance projects to Britain's Guardian, evidently feels the same way. "I can't in good conscience allow the U.S. government," he explained, ... Go To Article

MICHAEL BARONE: Government regs hurt passenger rail | WashingtonExaminer.com

June 9, 2013 BY Michael Barone That’s the message of this paper from the Competitive Enterprise Institute. The writers point out the American safety regulators require passenger rail cars to be much heavier than European regulators do. But over the years, they say, the European cars have proved just as safe, and perhaps more so. The problem is that Amtrak and ... Go To Article

MICHAEL BARONE: Democrats’ steep uphill road to recapture House | WashEx

Michael Barone, June 7, 2013 Can Democrats gain the 17 seats they need to win control of the House in 2014? Maybe, but the numbers look forbidding. Remember that while Barack Obama was reelected with 332 electoral votes he carried only 209 of the 435 congressional districts. Mitt Romney carried 226. Only 17 Republicans were elected in districts carried by Obama; 9 ... Go To Article

MICHAEL BARONE: Tragedy of Detroit shows ‘Big Unit’ America is out of gas | WashEx

June 1, 2013 | Michael Barone Detroit, once one of the nation's most vibranty cities, faces imminent bankruptcy. That's the headline from the report last month of Emergency Fiscal Manager Kevyn Orr, issued 45 days after he was appointed this spring by Gov. Rick Snyder to take over the city's government. MICHAEL BARONE:: Unintended consequences often bedevil reformers | WashEx

May 28, 2013 | 9:00 pm -- A thoughtful reformer targets the traditional rules of an aging institution that has retarded progress in the past. Time to modernize those rules, the reformer says, and prevent obstruction in the future. The trouble is that such reform efforts often prove counterproductive. New rules strengthen rather than weaken the aging institution. ... Go To Article

MICHAEL BARONE: Obama’s IRS and AP scandals cast Big Chill on free speech | WashEx

Michael Barone, May 18, 2013 | 9:00 pm Chilling effect. That's the term lawyers and judges use to describe the result of government actions that deter people from exercising their right of free speech. There have been plenty of examples in the past 10 days. The Obama administration's Justice Department issued a sweeping demand for two months of office, cellular ... Go To Article

MICHAEL BARONE: The Meaning Inside the Political Numbers – WSJ

By MICHAEL BARONE, OPINIONMay 6, 2013, 7:08 p.m. ET With black and Hispanic support clustered by district, Democrats in 2014 will have a hard time retaking the House. Psephologists—the fancy word for election analysts—like to talk about change and transformation. One party or the other, they say, is on the verge of forging an enduring national majority. One ... MICHAEL BARONE: Obama’s blink on Syria could bring peril to allies | WashEx

Michael Barone: April 30, 2013 "We're eyeball to eyeball, and I think the other fellow just blinked," Secretary of State Dean Rusk famously said during the Cuban missile crisis. Barack Obama has been doing a lot of blinking lately. On Syria especially. "There would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movements on the chemical weapons front or the use of ...
